Outcomes after The Fontan Operation
The Fontan procedure has been successful in the treatment of children with single ventricle. Approximately 1000 patients in the US undergo the surgery with favorable early outcomes. However, mid and late mortality is significant. Dr. Andrew Atz of the Children's Heart Program of South Carolina, discusses complications, interventions and long term outcomes of the Fontan surgery.
